“The mind is everything. What we think we become.” -Buddha

For those of you who do not believe in affirmations, I’d like to explain a few facts. Every thought you think and every word you speak is an affirmation. All of our self-talk, our internal dialogue, is a stream of affirmations. You’re using affirmations every moment whether you know it or not. You’re affirming and creating your life experiences with every word and thought. Let’s see six rules that will help you use this wonderful tool for your own benefit.

1. Stop complaining!

Please realize that every complaint is an affirmation of something you think you don’t want in your life. Every time you get angry, you’re affirming that you want more anger in your life. Every time you feel like a victim, you’re affirming that you want to continue to feel like a victim. If you feel that life isn’t giving you what you want in your world, then it’s certain that you will never have the goodies that life gives to others-that is, until you change the way you think and talk.

Your beliefs are merely habitual thinking patterns that you learned as a child. Many of them work very well for you. Other beliefs may be limiting your ability to create the very things you say you want. What you want and what you believe you deserve may be very different. You need to pay attention to your thoughts so that you can begin to eliminate the ones creating experiences you do not want in your life.

2. Believe it will work for you!

Have a deep inner belief that affirmations will change your life. Most people say affirmations don’t work which is an affirmation in itself. By saying so, what they mean is that they don’t know how to use them correctly. Some people say, I will be successful but then think that this is not practical, and it won’t work. Which affirmation do you think will win out? The negative one, of course, because it is part of a long-standing, habitual way of looking at life.

Sometimes people will say their affirmations once a day and complain the rest of the time. It will take a long time for affirmations to work if they’re done that way. The complaining affirmations will always win, because there are more of them, and they’re usually said more consciously.

However, saying affirmations is only part of the process. What you do the rest of the day and night is even more important. The secret to having your affirmations work quickly and consistently is to prepare an atmosphere for them to grow in. The more thoughts you have that make you feel confidant and action oriented, the quicker the affirmations work.

3. Keep a keen watch on your thought patterns

You need not blame yourself for thinking the way you do. You’ve just never learned how to think and talk. More and more people are just now beginning to learn that our thoughts create our experiences. Your parents probably didn’t know this, so they couldn’t possibly teach it to you. They taught you how to look at life in the way that their parents taught them. So, nobody is wrong. However, it’s time for all of us to wake up and begin to consciously create our lives in a way that pleases and supports us. You can do it. I can do it. We all can do it-we just need to learn how. So, let’s get to it.

So, think happy, positive thoughts, it’s that simple. And it is doable. The way you choose to think, right now, is just that-a choice. You may not realize it because you’ve thought this way for so long, but it really is a choice. Now . . . today . . . this moment . . . you can choose to change your thinking. Your life won’t turn around overnight, but if you’re consistent and make the choice on a daily basis to think thoughts that make you feel good, you’ll definitely make positive changes in every area of your life.

4. Take advantage of your thinking style

The human brain is programmed to function in a strange way. It reacts immediately for making essential decisions like food and survival. It avoids making rigorous analytical assessments about everything. That means your brain is forever creating shortcuts and biases; and that leads to beliefs that we all have without justifications.

A person tends to find the same thing everywhere what he has been thinking about; like when you plan to buy a new car and suddenly see that car everywhere. This is one example of shortcuts the brain takes to avoid thinking. Thinking is time consuming; and the brain avoids it until unless necessary.

Affirmations use these biases for your own benefit. They teach your brain a new way to think about the world. If you repeat phrases to convince your brain that you’ll complete a task or achieve a target, then your brain starts to subconsciously search for signs that will make this true. When it does, the brain will then present the sign to the conscious mind. All of a sudden, you’ll begin noticing points and proofs that’ll help you to achieve your goals. The affirmations just need time to help your brain tune into the good stuff.

5. Make specific goal statements that work like a charm

Create goal statements that are time bound and achievable. The best affirmations are specific because it gives your brain a very clear set of guidelines on what to process for you.

6. Repetition is the key

Make it a habit to repeat affirmation statements internally and externally. Almost all spiritual schools of thoughts have a practice of repeating a name, phrase or mantra repeated several times a day for several days together. This has a profound effect on their spiritual progress. The same principle can be applied for achieving mundane goals too.

Repeat the goal statement in the morning right after waking up, as this is when your mind is in an Alpha state. Write the statement down several times every day just like you write impositions in schools. Yes, there’s a reason behind writing impositions. It creates a subconscious effect. You can use it for a positive benefit with affirmations. The idea is to keep hitting your inner mind with your statements, till it starts believing that it is actually a reality, and use the boundless creativity of the human mind to bring them to life.

Now you know the six rules that will make affirmations work for you. Affirmation practice can be started at a very early age. That is when the best results can be got quickly, as the brain is in a highly mouldable state. So set your goals and start your journey to achieve them through affirmations. You will get there.
